Cloudrest brings the shakuhachi’s use of space, silence, and breath into the cyclic rhythms and glorious clamor of the gamelan, with Lisa Karrer’s soprano both an extension of the shakuhachi sound and a link to the gamelan’s sound world. It was written for Gamelan Son of Lion, where I was composer-in-residence during the 2009-10 season.
