Reflections in a Weir

shakuhachi 1.6, shakuhachi 1.8, and shakuhachi 2.1 (3 players) (2012)

duration: 9:00

program note

A weir is a barrier across a river which changes the flow of the water.

These two movements were written for Laurie and Kinya Sogawa, who premiered the piece with the composer at Roulette on September 23rd, 2012. Reflections in a Weir is played on three shakuhachi of different sizes. Gestures and phrases inspired by traditional shakuhachi music are transformed as they subtly interact.
