program note

Hermit Thrush, for solo shakuhachi, was written in spring, 1991 at the MacDowell Colony in Peterborough, New Hampshire, where the clear, ethereal song of the hermit thrush was often heard at dusk. It’s modeled after traditional shakuhachi Honkyoku, with phrases the length and shape of a breath, and subtle variations in color and pitch. It was included in the CD In Concert…2009 which supported Associated Musicians of Greater New York Local 802 Musicians’ Emergency Relief Fund.
