Elizabeth Brown performing on theremin

Performer

I’ve often performed other people’s music as well as my own. Here are some of those performances.

Flute Performances

Early in my flute career, I performed, recorded and toured extensively as principal flutist of Philharmonia Virtuosi. Here is my recording of the Martin Ballade; the full playlist includes the Martin Concerto for 7 Winds.

In the 80’s and 90’s, I performed a lot with Orpheus, touring South America, Japan, Europe, and Southeast Asia, and making a number of recordings for Deutsche Grammophon, including Prokoffief’s Classical Symphony, Bizet’s Symphony in C, Ives’ The Unanswered Question, Stravinsky’s Orpheus, and Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez. It was a thrill to play with my dear friend flutist Susan Palma-Nidel.

As an orchestral freelancer, I played with the Brooklyn Philharmonic and the American Composers Orchestra when both were under the baton of Dennis Russel Davies; a highlight was playing alto flute in Gia Kanchelli’s Written on the Wind with Brooklyn Phil on my 40th birthday; we recorded this piece for ECM with violist Kim Kashkashian. I’ve also performed a lot with the american Symphony, the NYC Ballet Orchestra, and the Westchester Philharmonic.

I was a member of the flute quartet Flute Force for many years; here we are playing Schwantner.

I’ve played with Music from Japan for a number of seasons, including a duo recital in 2011.

From 1979-1987, I was flutist for Eric Hawkins Dance Company, including many performances of Greek Dreams with Flute, a set of solo flute pieces.

Here is Hamadryad, for which I played Debussy’s Syrinx.
Choreography Jean Erdman

Danced by Miki Orihara
Music by Claude Debussy, performed by Elizabeth Brown

I played chamber music with the Apple Hill Chamber Players, the North Country Chamber Players, Winsor Music, Speculum Musicae, the New York New Music Ensemble, and the Chamber Players of the League of Composers/ISCM, among others.

Shakuhachi Performances

I regularly teach and perform traditional Kinkyo-ryu shakuhachi repertoire.
Here is Igusa Reibo, one of my favorite shakuhachi Honkyoku.

I’ve given numerous recitals, including outdoor performances in The Grand Canyon, in the sculpture quarry of the Lacoste School for the Arts in Provence, and in the sculpture garden of the Noguchi Museum in NYC. In recent years, I’ve toured the U.S. and Japan with my trio of 2 shakuhachi (with Ralph Samuelson) and ichigenkin player Issui Minegishi, and performed on Ralph Samuelson’s annual Flutes of Hope program at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine which commemorates the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami. In 2019, I organized the Hodson Valley Shakuhachi Choir’s initial performance at Basilica Hudson’s 24-Hour Drone.

I’ve played the solo shakuhachi part in Karl Jenkins Requiem with Downeast Singers in Maine, and with the Brattleboro Music Center Concert choir.

I’ve played many of Frances White’s beautiful pieces for shakuhachi, including
Centre Bridge, which I recorded for Mode Records.
Under the Rose, which I’ve performed many times across the US and Japan.
And more recently, The book of evening, commissioned for the Momenta Quartet by NewMusicUSA and by the Sparkplug Foundation.

I’ve played several pieces by composer and shakuhachi player Devon Tipp (my former student!), including the duo Splintered Ringing, performed here with Ralph Samuelson.

Here is composer Alexandra Gardner’s solo Juniper

Here is Flute Force, playing Marty Regan’s Poem in December. for 3 flutes and shakuhachi.

Theremin Performances

In 2023, I played theremin with the Minnesota Orchestra under Thomas Søndergård in Lera Auerbach’s Icarus.

In 2018, I played theremin with the Boston Symphony under Andris Nelsons in Derek Bermel’s Elixir.

I’ve played theremin with the American Symphony several times, including Ives’ 4th Symphony  and Popov’s Symphonic Suite #1 at Avery Fisher Hall, and Schnittke’s oratorio Nagasaki at Carnegie Hall.

I played the soprano part on theremin in Schoenberg’s Entrückung (“Rapture”), the mystical finale of Arnold Schoenberg’s second quartet, with the Momenta Quartet in Momenta Festival III.
